Today I thought I’d answer a few quick questions about bento, and show you some of the possibilities that the new bento skeleton will give us. If you’re still confused about what bento is, don’t worry, when it goes live I’ll have a full video tutorial for you to follow 🙂
So what makes bento mesh heads different?
First of all, bento’s additional bones allow for animations to be more fluid and realistic, because it negates the need for ‘frame by frame’ style animations. In fact, the additional face and hand bones (shown below using Vista’s Bento Pro-Hands and Catwa’s Catya Bento head) are so damn realistic it’s kind of creepy!
Quick tip – If you’re looking for some subtle open mouth animations for your bento head, the amazing Maylee Oh (the owner of The Secret Store and honestly one of the most talented people I’ve ever have the opportunity to watch create) has made some slightly open mouth animations and put them on Marketplace for 0L – you can grab them here, thanks Anya!
I thought the easiest way to explain this versatility of bento mesh heads would be to ask some of my Plurk friends to share their looks with you! All of these pictures are of people wearing the same head, Catwa’s Catya head, and as you can see, they’ve all made use of the facial sliders to create their own face shapes, just like with system heads!
A huge thank you to those who allowed me to display their images here – the Plurk feed in full can be seen here, and I’ve linked back what pics I can to their Flickrs, but for reference the users are (in order): Daeberethwen, Nina Blake, Witchie, Sophee Mojo, Medow, Anya Ohmai, Sophia Harlow and Lils – thank you for sharing these with us ladies!
Now bento is still in beta testing, and there are still some bugs to work out with it to too. One common issue is when using animations on a mesh head with a custom shape, quite often your mouth can get left open/distorted. I call it the slack jaw effect 😛 I’m not sure if this is an Alpha viewer issue or a wider issue with bento, but here’s hoping they work that out before it goes mainstream!
